The Barber Shoppe - Attitude in Spades

Written by Bud Watson-Firth on August 6, 2010

I went here a few times and stopped because he treats his customers like crap. (The price was fine but I was always afraid that I would tick him off and he would give me a crappy cut out of spite). Plus, he kept trying to sell me overpriced junk to put in my hair.

(And I once saw him inflate his price to a ludicrous amount because the guy had long hair. For shame, long-haired guy!)

Deck @ High Country Inn - You call that a salad?!?!

Written by Bud Watson-Firth on June 22, 2010

A smurf's handful of spinach, five paper-thin (literally) shavings of bison meat, and a couple of toppings should not be called a salad. It should be called a side-salad at best. Also, it shouldn't cost $12. If I have to complain about the micro-size of a "meal" salad, I would hope that the chef or the waitress would do something about it. Like give me another handful of spinach. Apparently the High Country Inn is content with gouging its customers for 25 cents worth of meat and ten cents worth of spinach. I left hungry and unsatisfied and won't be back.

Mac's Fireweed Books - Always find what I'm looking for.

I agree with Geof. There has never been a time when I haven't been able to find a book on my preferred subject of the day. I love the northern books section.

The Ridge Pub Grill and Offsales - A nice addition to the neighbourhood

Written by Bud Watson-Firth on February 10, 2010

Very nice decor and a great location. All the hard surfaces make it a little noisy inside, but that's not a serious complaint. At least the TVs aren't cranked up. It's still easy to have a conversation with friends.

Don't know about the food, personally, but I've heard others talk about that as an issue.

Northwestel - Value for money an issue.

Written by Bud Watson-Firth on February 10, 2010

I agree. Great service (although I can't say the same for their Navigo division), but the value for money is a huge issue (especially if you compare their prices and products to southern Canada). They've made some improvements in this area but they still have a LONG way to go!

Riverside Grocery - Like some kind of magic emporium

Written by Bud Watson-Firth on February 10, 2010

This place is tiny - and yet it seems to have EVERYTHING! They have things that nobody else in town has. Every time I go I discover something new and exciting. I know some people who have special dietary requirements and Riverside is their saving grace. I love grocery shopping here.

Real Canadian Superstore - Drives me nuts to shop here.

Written by Bud Watson-Firth on February 10, 2010

I dread shopping at the Superstore. Even more so if I don't have a loonie or one of those flippin' tokens for the darned carts. . It's a big place so you'd think they would sell fresh meat and have a real butcher but it ain't the case: Most of the meat is pre-seasoned in salty-tasting crud.

At least the line ups have improved somewhat. Or maybe I'm just going at the right time now.

Sanchez Cantina - Fun an tasty

When I have company come to town, this is where I take them. The room is warm and friendly and the food is fresh and delicious.

Yukon Theatre - Stay at home

Written by Bud Watson-Firth on February 10, 2010

Sticky floors, uncomfortable seats, lousy sound, an unimpressive screen, and I could go on but I won't. Do they have heat again? I get more satisfaction watching old VHS movies on my 32-inch cathode TV at home than I do at this place. They should pay ME to watch movies there. Maybe that's why I only go to watch a movie there about once every year. My fingers are crossed that their planned renovations are more than just cosmetic.

Pho 5 Star Vietnamese Cuisine - Service great but food could be better

Written by Bud Watson-Firth on February 10, 2010

The service really is great, but as far as the food goes (comparing Vietnamese restaurants to Vietnamese restaurants), I would put Pho 5 Star in the low-middle range.

With that being said, I'm happy to have them in Whitehorse!

Kal Tire - Gotta agree with Anthony

Written by Bud Watson-Firth on February 10, 2010

I bought some tires from there the other day. They had the tires in stock, whipped up a quick quote, and worked around my schedule - not forcing me to work around theirs. The guy used my name to wish me well when I was leaving .

I got a follow-up call tonight from Kal Tire tonight asking for feedback.

THAT'S attention to customer service.

I've always been happy with the tires I've purchased there, too.

John's Auto - Great mechanic. Stands behind his work.

Written by Bud Watson-Firth on February 8, 2010

Had a battery replaced by them once. The battery died the next winter. After I called, he drove to my house with a new one.

I know that when I take my car there for a major repair or a regular servicing they'll do a good job and they'll do it quickly. They've even gone so far as to pick up my vehicle up for me when I don't have the time to drive it out to their shop.

I'm glad they're here.

Yukon News - Needs a name change.

Written by Bud Watson-Firth on February 8, 2010

I wish the thing didn't always read like an editorial. I don't care if the controversial approach sells more newspapers, just state the facts and let me form my own opinion. It's the Yukon News, not the Richard Mostyn and His Band of Merry Editorial Writers Thrice-Weekly Soapbox. I'll buy it anyway, but I'll be much happier when I pay for my paper to know that I'm getting actual, balanced news.

Also, it would be nice if they could find a delivery person for my neighbourhood. It has been, like, a year now. Not everyone wants to subscribe online. What can I say? I like reading the paper while I eat my breakfast.

Super A - Porter Creek - Worth every penny

Written by Bud Watson-Firth on February 7, 2010

While it may be more expensive than the Superstore, but the short lines, the no-fishing-for-loonies-so-I-can-use-a-cart, speed with which I can do my shopping, fresh produce, and excellent meat selection (and the meat isn't usually seasoned in that salty crud the Superstore likes to bathe their meat in) and the actual butcher more than makes up for the added cost.

My preferred grocery shopping choice.

MEADIA Solutions - Glad they're here.

Written by Bud Watson-Firth on February 2, 2010

They sell good products and have great service. They've bailed me out a couple of times when something went wrong with my computer. The aggressive up-selling gets tiring, though.

Aurora Inn - Clean, comfortable, and friendly.

Written by Bud Watson-Firth on February 1, 2010

Summer or winter, I love staying here when I'm in Dawson City.

Air Canada - Awful.

Written by Bud Watson-Firth on February 1, 2010

Whether there's something wrong with the plane (frozen plumbing, for example) or just bad employee attitudes, I don't even bother with them any more.

The only good thing I can think to say is that they've got TVs on the backs of the seats.

Air North - Always amazing service

Written by Bud Watson-Firth on February 1, 2010

Every time I fly with Air North, the service is amazing. The employees obviously care about the airline and their passengers. They always lend an extra hand helping us corral our kids. And there's actually food on the flights!
